There have been numerous shark sightings, but the water is crystal clear, and the area is evacuated after each sighting.

BISCAYNE PARK - HOMESTEAD

This park is known as a family park. Boat trips daily during weekends transport swimmers and snorkelers to the living reef where you can meet and greet the many forms of animal life here. The immobile residents of the reef also add interest and color. This makes a great family weekend getaway with activities to suit children and adults alike

RED REEF - BOCA RATON

Red Reef is also an artificial reef, although not so large as the Coral Gardens Reef. The aquatic animals have adopted the reef as home, so swimming and snorkeling opportunities abound in these warm waters. The artificial Red Reef has a boardwalk so you can actually get close to the reef without worry of getting wet.

JOHN PENNECAMP STATE PARK - KEY LARGO

This state park is one of the few in the country that is completely submerged. Park officials conduct daily tours over the wonderful underwater coral formations and rent snorkeling equipment to those who want to explore the waters more thoroughly. With your own boating equipment you should make an effort to visit White Banks Reef where over 400 variety of tropic fish can be seen and studied to your heart’s content. White Banks Reef includes both hard and soft coral patches.

History of snorkeling

Mankind has always wanted to view, visit and understand the world which surrounds him. He has always wanted to fly and did not really give up on the conquest of the undersea world. Early free divers sometimes trained their entire lives, learning to their breath for amazingly long periods of time in order to dive for sponges or sometimes for food fish or oysters.

Later, efforts were made to extend the time underwater by breathing through a hollow reed. Bas-relief depictions of Assyrians in about 900 BC show ancient divers carrying animal skins filled with air under the ocean’s surface with them in order to have additional time there. Continued efforts in the direction of trapped air being carried down into the water resulted in a massive diving bell encouraged by Alexander the Great. In the mid 1500’s, another diving bell took two divers to the bottom of the Targus River and back to the surface wearing dry clothes and with a burning candle.

The exploration of the ocean bottom continued on this limited basis. Explorers found they needed to build larger and stronger diving bells and the weight of the contraptions meant complicated methods for lowering and raising it. The logistics involved with pumping the right mixture of air to the men below continued, as did the difficulties with mobility.

In 1771 a British engineer, John Smeaton developed plans for the first air pump and again the possibilities of moving about underwater began to be exciting. Further developments and refinements brought about the Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus and the intrepid underwater visitors found they could stay underwater for extended periods of time with very little limitation on their mobility. By carrying a tank of pressurized air on their banks, they were able to swim with the fishes in relative comfort.

Snorkeling today is largely done for recreational purposes. It requires no complicated equipment, just a short tube which connects to the surface. It is less a means of exploring and visiting ocean bottoms than a method of viewing what lies just under the surface of the waters. Snorkelers can swim leisurely along through the warm, inviting waters of areas such as Hawaii, Thailand, and Australia, enjoying the sight of brightly colored fishes and crustaceans moving along through the water, or scuttling about in the sand. Snorkeling in corsica

Corsica is a well known place where many people love to snorkel. On almost any beach you visit, you will find people with snorkeling equipment. The seas are rougher around this lovely island than in other areas, but the beaches are wide and flat.

PORTIGLIOLO

Portigliolo lies on the western shore of the island of Corsica, about midway between Propriano and Belvedere. Portigliolo is not even a village, just a restaurant and two campgrounds, but it has a wonderful snorkeling spot just off the restaurant parking lot.

A few feet from shore are large rocks, some partially submerged in the surf. A great deal of enjoyment can be gained during the snorkeling trip to and from the rocks. Some of the unique fish which could be viewed here include small Triple Fins and young Barracudas.
Another nice feature about Portigliolo is that it is very protected from the prevalent south wind.

TIZZANO

This isolated village has two bays, the first of the two is located behind the usual beachfront restaurant and down a small footpath. The bay is well worth visiting. It has some protection from the west wind and the water is very clear, making for good viewing of the attendant sea life. Slabs of rock below the surface of the water are not overgrown, thus offering food for the sea creatures with some hiding places. By looking closely, almost nose to nose with the rocks, you will be able to view small crustaceans as well as the small blenny which features a sharp dorsal fin and prefers to hide in the small caves.

Further from shore, you will be able to snorkel through a field of sea grass which offers marvelous opportunities for viewing a large number and variety of sea creatures.

Because of its isolation, the bay is not heavily used, which can make for a tremendous advantage if you hate having to bump into other snorkelers, but it is also rather difficult to reach with a somewhat long and arduous motor trip.

Although Corsica does have an entirely different character than the tropical islands of the Caribbean, its location south of France in the Mediterranean Sea gives one a unique and enjoyable type of snorkeling.
